Laura McKee used to work in a record shop. She started writing poetry by mistake in her head while pushing her youngest child in his pushchair to playgroup. Once, when the lights went down, Arthur Miller came along the row to sit beside her to watch his own play. She may be related to Lillie Langtry but then again she may not.
Take Care of Your Hooves Darling is published by Against the Grain May 2023. ‘Distilled, thrillingly surreal glimpses of life that recall the always surprising imagery of Selima Hill’ – Andrew McMillan.
sheepish
she awoke on her back
not as a dry clicking beetle
with legs in the air
instead where she touched
she felt something
like wool
and the sweat from her brow
where hard thoughts
had grown and curled forth
into the horns of a ram
